Hire technical support engineers

Updated

TechSupport Team supplies dedicated L2 (second-level) and L3 (third-level) application support engineers who work under your engineering manager in your ticket queue. Technical support is our primary focus, and we support all programming languages. A Tech Lead supports technical coordination and continuity. We can plan a team for 24/7 coverage.

Summary

Your manager sets priorities and approves changes. TechSupport Team engineers investigate production incidents, reproduce defects and collaborate with your developers on tested fixes. A Tech Lead helps coordinate investigations, escalation and handovers within your operating model. Scope a small dedicated team or a wider coverage rotation; the proposed engineers, start dates and working hours are agreed for your engagement.

Roles you can add to your team

If you are comparing help desk staffing, first separate frontline agents from technical escalation engineers. TechSupport Team supplies the L2/L3 engineering part, not L1 agents or permanent-placement recruiting. The support levels handbook explains the boundary.

Support engineer roles and what each one does
RoleWhat the engineer doesAccess neededAdd this role when
L2 support engineer (Tier 2)Takes escalated tickets, reproduces problems, reads logs and traces, queries data, applies workarounds and restores service.Logs, monitoring, read access to data and runbook permissions.Your first-line team escalates more issues than your engineers can handle.
L3 support engineer (Tier 3)Fixes causes in code or infrastructure, writes tests and supports releases.Source repository, test environment and deployment pipeline.Escalations wait for product engineers, or nobody owns an inherited system.

On a smaller system, one engineer can hold both roles. The assessment confirms which roles your systems need and checks each engineer's experience with your stack. For 24/7 coverage, several engineers share your queue in a shift rotation.

How a dedicated engineer works in your team

Staff augmentation fits when you have a technical lead to assign work and review changes. It adds engineering capacity; it does not transfer management of your support operation.

  • Works your ticket queue and joins your chat channels, stand-ups and incident calls.
  • Follows your runbooks, coding standards and change approval rules.
  • Takes priorities from your team lead, like any member of your team.
  • Uses named accounts that you create and can remove at any time.
  • Writes incident records and updates runbooks, so the knowledge stays with your team.
  • Hands over open work at the end of each shift when several engineers share a queue.

You direct the work

In staff augmentation, your team lead decides priorities and approves changes. If you want TechSupport Team to own incidents against agreed targets, choose a managed support team instead.

How hiring works

  1. Tell us what you need

Describe the roles, your stack, the hours to cover and your preferred start date in the engineer request form. The requested date is a planning input, not a confirmed start.

  2. Assessment

We review your systems, tools, incident history and support process. We confirm the technology skills your support team needs before preparing role descriptions and an onboarding plan.

  3. Engineer proposal

The proposal defines the roles, required stack experience and coverage. Any proposed engineers and their availability are confirmed for your engagement.

  4. Interviews

Agree the interview and selection steps, the experience to check and who on your team approves the fit before onboarding.

  5. Onboarding

You create named accounts. Your engineers explain the systems, and our engineers shadow your team on live tickets.

  6. First review

After an agreed period, we review the work with you and agree changes, such as more engineers or different hours.

The support engineer onboarding plan lists each phase, what it produces and the checks needed before the next phase.

24/7 coverage with dedicated engineers

One engineer cannot cover 24/7. A week has 168 hours, and a full-time engineer works about 40 of them. Round-the-clock coverage needs a shift rotation with backup for leave and sickness.

Your team lead sets the rules for each shift. At night, engineers follow your runbooks and approval rules, and call your on-call contacts when a decision is yours. The 24/7 technical support page compares staffed shifts with on-call escalation.

Use the escalation matrix template to record the primary engineer, backup and approval contact for each incident. Set the contact and timing rules before the first shift.

What you provide

  • A team lead who sets priorities and reviews the work.
  • Named accounts with the access each role needs. See security and access.
  • Documentation and runbooks, or time from your engineers to build them during onboarding.
  • Your ticketing, chat and monitoring tools.
  • Change approval rules and release windows.

What our engineers do not do

  • Answer your end customers as a first-line helpdesk or customer-service team.
  • Repair consumer devices or provide on-site hardware service.
  • Replace official vendor support for products you license.
  • Work on systems or stacks that the assessment did not confirm.

Onboarding, service levels and cost

Engineers work independently after the onboarding acceptance checks: agreed systems and roles, tested access, reviewed runbooks and named escalation contacts. The pricing page explains the monthly fee per engineer and the cost of a 24/7 rotation. If your agreement includes response targets, the service levels define how they work.

Prepare a support engineer brief

List the application and stack, the incidents that need L2 or L3 work, the coverage hours and the team lead who will direct the engineer. Add any access or release constraints. Send the brief without logs, source code or credentials; the assessment can then define the role and onboarding dependencies.

Questions buyers ask

What is support staff augmentation?

Support staff augmentation adds external engineers to your own team. TechSupport Team provides dedicated L2 and L3 engineers who use your tools, follow your processes and take direction from your team lead. It is not permanent-placement recruiting or a transfer of daily management to a provider.

Can we interview the engineers before they join?

Interview and selection steps are agreed for your engagement. Use the assessment to define the stack experience, incident work and coverage each role needs, then agree how your team reviews any proposed engineer before onboarding.

Can we hire one senior application support engineer?

A one-engineer engagement is possible, subject to the experience and availability your role needs. Define the seniority and stack during assessment rather than assuming a ready candidate. One engineer cannot cover 24/7; any night or weekend rotation needs its own agreed coverage plan.

What happens if an engineer is not the right fit?

Raise the gap with your TechSupport Team contact and review it against the agreed role. Record any replacement process, notice period and handover requirements in the agreement; this page does not promise an immediate replacement.

Can we add or remove engineers later?

Request a review when the workload changes. Any change in roles, engineer numbers or hours depends on the agreed terms and confirmed availability. Include notice periods and handover requirements before changing the team.

How soon can a support engineer start?

Timing depends on role fit, availability, access and knowledge transfer. The assessment sets an onboarding plan and readiness checks. A preferred date in the request form is not a guaranteed start date, and independent work begins only after the agreed checks are complete.

Who owns the code and documents the engineers produce?

Your agreement sets ownership. Engineers commit code to your repository through your review process and keep documents in your systems.
