Define the L2/L3 support engineer you need
Define an L2 or L3 support role before you hire. This TechSupport Team template focuses on production software: incident diagnosis, approved repairs, clear escalation and useful handovers. Adapt the duties to your application, team and working hours.
Define the support work before hiring
TechSupport Team's technical support engineer job description template separates L2 investigation from L3 repair. A useful role brief names the systems, technical skills, coverage hours, reporting line and production permissions. It also explains which decisions stay with the application owner. Use the template to define the role, then use the interview scorecard to assess candidates against it.

Role title
Technical Support Engineer, Production Applications
Role purpose
Investigate technical incidents in production applications and help restore service through the agreed support process. Collect useful evidence, follow approved runbooks and work with application owners on repairs. Maintain a clear incident record so another engineer can continue the work.
Core responsibilities
- Confirm the affected system, users, time range and business impact of an incident.
- Review permitted logs, monitoring data, configuration and application behavior to test possible causes.
- Reproduce problems in a suitable environment when possible.
- Follow approved recovery steps and record the actions taken.
- Escalate issues with evidence, completed checks and a clear question for the next owner.
- Prepare technical updates for the people responsible for customer or business communication.
- Maintain runbooks, known-issue notes and shift handovers.
- Review repeat incidents and propose improvements that address their causes.
- Work within access, data-handling and production-change controls.
Additional responsibilities for an L3 role
- Investigate faults that require code, database or infrastructure changes within the agreed scope.
- Prepare a repair with a clear explanation of the cause and affected behavior.
- Add or update regression checks and record the test evidence.
- Review release and rollback risks with the production-change owner.
- Support post-release validation and update the incident or root-cause record.
Required skills
- Evidence of structured incident investigation and clear technical reasoning.
- Practical experience with the application technologies required for the role.
- Ability to use logs, monitoring and approved data checks to narrow a problem.
- Understanding of APIs, databases or deployment processes where these are part of the application.
- Clear written incident updates and handovers.
- Sound judgment about access, approvals, sensitive data and escalation.
- For L3 responsibilities, evidence of relevant repair, testing and release skills.
Working relationships
The engineer works with the support lead, application owner and product or infrastructure engineers. First-line support owns the initial user conversation unless the role brief explicitly assigns that responsibility. The production-change owner approves actions outside pre-authorized runbooks. The brief must name the reporting line and the escalation route.
Success measures
Review investigation quality, useful escalation evidence, backlog age, reopened incidents, repeat causes and handover quality. Compare results over a stated period with ticket volume and scope. Do not judge performance only by the number of tickets closed or speed of the first reply.
Coverage and access
The final role brief must state working hours, time zone, shift expectations and any on-call duties. It must also state the systems and access required. A single dedicated engineer does not provide a full 24/7 rotation. Do not imply production write access or deployment authority unless it is part of the approved role.
Choose L2, L3 or a combined role
| Role | Main responsibility | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| L2 (second-level) support engineer | Investigate incidents, apply approved runbooks and prepare useful escalations. | An investigation example with evidence, reasoning and a clear handover. |
| L3 (third-level) support engineer | Diagnose deeper causes and prepare tested code or infrastructure repairs. | A repair example with tests, release risk and production approval boundaries. |
| Combined L2/L3 engineer | Investigate incidents and repair suitable issues within an agreed scope. | Both kinds of evidence, plus a clear account of when the engineer escalates. |
These labels vary between organizations. Define the work before relying on a title. See the L1, L2 and L3 comparison for a fuller explanation.
Complete the brief before you use it
Add the application and business context, required stack, reporting line, working hours and access rules. Separate skills needed on day one from skills that can be learned during onboarding. State how the candidate will be assessed. If you turn this into a public vacancy, add your own verified employer details, location, pay and employment terms using your normal hiring process. This page is a reusable role template, not a current vacancy at TechSupport Team.
For a staff augmentation brief, identify the manager who directs the engineer and the work that needs additional capacity. For a managed support brief, define team responsibilities, system scope and coverage as well. A job description alone does not define a managed service.
Assess the role you have defined
Use the same role criteria for each candidate. Ask for an incident example and a short, controlled exercise. For an L3 role, include repair and test reasoning. Record what the candidate demonstrated and where more evidence is needed. Use the TechSupport Team interview questions and scorecard.
Job description questions
Is this a helpdesk job description?
This template focuses on L2/L3 engineering work for software applications. Helpdesk roles may also include password resets, device setup and direct user assistance. Add those duties only if they are part of the role you actually need.
Should every support engineer write code?
Not every role needs code changes. L2 work may focus on diagnosis and approved recovery. L3 work often requires code or infrastructure repairs. Match the requirement to the system and responsibilities, then test it during selection.
Can we use this for application support engineers?
Yes. Name the application, stack, business processes and integrations in the brief. Explain the incident types, maintenance boundary and escalation route. The title matters less than the work and evidence you require.
Can TechSupport Team provide engineers for this role?
TechSupport Team provides dedicated L2/L3 engineers under a client's manager and managed teams for an agreed support scope. Share the role, stack and coverage needs so the responsibilities and selection process can be defined.
